You have probably heard the word many times, Prevent, or the Prevent strategy or even the Prevent Duty guidance. But what does it actually mean?

So let's start with the actual Prevent Strategy, what does it stand for and what are the main objectives?

The aim of the Prevent Strategy is to reduce the threat to the UK from terrorism by stopping people becoming terrorists or supporting terrorism. The Prevent Duty Guidance 2021 is something that all school staff attend training on and also educate our pupils about.

The Prevent Strategy has 3 main objectives -

  • respond to the ideological challenge of terrorism and the threat we face from those who promote it
  • prevent people from being drawn into terrorism and ensure that they are given appropriate advice and support
  • work with sectors and institutions where there are risks of radicalisation that we need to address.

Extremist ideology has shifted over time, years ago schools would train staff and educate pupils mainly about Islamic extremism however now the risk has shifted more to extreme Right Wing ideology.

I have found a really good website that give information about preventing radicalisation but also gives the signs to look out for, what to do if you are worried about someone expressing extreme views and where to look for support. It has some great videos and advice , take a look -
